Tam, Johnny

Johnny Tam is currently a graduate student in Bioengineering at UC Berkeley and UCSF. He studies retinal capillaries in human diabetics using adaptive optics. Johnny was part of a teaching team at the Maui Community College that introduced electronics students to Charge-Coupled-Devices (CCDs) using interactive, inquiry-based teaching activities. Part of the activity illustrated how CCDs were used in adaptive optics retinal imaging – an example of combining research with science education, which Johnny feels will be important for him in his future career. After obtaining his PhD, Johnny plans to pursue post-doctoral training leading to a faculty position, and hopes to find new ways to inspire science education in fields related to his research.
